Safety
In order to guarantee the safety and comfortability for everyone at the event, all participants are expected to follow the Finnish law and this code of conduct.
Alert safety personnel (järjestyksenvalvoja) or other event organisers of any accidents, disruptive behaviour, or other problems immediately. We will step in to resolve incidents regarding any inappropriate or disruptive behaviour, and the organisers will call law enforcement if needed.
Directions given by the safety personnel, event organisers, as well as law enforcement, must be followed in all situations. Safety personnel are entitled to remove disruptive individuals from the event.
These rules are not meant to prevent or hamper having fun at the event. Not all prohibited behaviours and items have been listed here.
General
Finncon is open and welcoming to everyone. We do not approve of discrimination of any kind at our event.
About the venue
Littering, making a mess, or breaking anything at the venue is prohibited. It’s not allowed to enter areas that have been closed to the public. It is not allowed to move furniture or other items.
Putting up ads or other papers or items on the venue walls is strictly prohibited.
Recycling is to be done following the instructions on the waste bins.
Costume props and weapon replicas
We ask that everyone who has big props and objects exercise caution when moving at the con site. All real weapons are prohibited. Any weapon replicas bigger than a lightsaber will have to be deposited at the info desk for safekeeping.
In general, bringing any weapons and items resembling real weapons to the event is prohibited. Such items include airsoft guns, other gun replicas, ornamental swords, all bladed weapons. This decision is based on the 10th clause of the public order law, that prohibits weapons and items resembling them in public places. We are prioritising safety at our event (and want to stay out of gossip columns as well).
You are allowed to carry and show off props that are a part of your costume during the Masquerade. Safety and common sense need to be exercised during the show. No pyrotechnics are allowed.
Access routes
Access routes at the venue need to be kept open. Do not sit on stairways or crowd door areas or other bottlenecks, so we can avoid jams.
Alcohol and other intoxicating substances
Possession and holding of alcoholic beverages as well as any other intoxicating substances is prohibited at the venue. Finncon is open to all ages. Alcohol is not served at the event venue.
Smoking
Smoking is prohibited everywhere inside the venue. This also includes all types of electric cigarettes. Smoking is allowed outside near ashtrays, in areas that do not have a smoking ban.
Disturbances and harassment
All participants at Finncon are enjoyers of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, or their different variations, and everyone has a right to be at the event as who they are, without being disturbed or harassed. In this context, harassment includes all kinds of discrimination, bullying, judgement of opinions, looks or style, violating personal space or bodily integrity, as well as all other disruptive behaviour. Anyone can experience harassment despite their gender, age, opinions, looks or other aspects.
Finncon has a separate listeners team that deals with harassment. If you experience or witness any type of disruptive behaviour, harassment, or other concerning behaviour, please alert the closest security officer or the info desk, or call the listeners (häirintäyhdyskenkilö). If you cannot contact any of the above, you can find any organiser or volunteer working the event, and they will make sure the matter reaches the right people. We ask that all such situations are reported to the harassment contact persons or security officers even if they get resolved without intervention by event personnel, so we can work towards avoiding such incidents in the future.
Emergencies
In case of an emergency, immediately alert the Info desk or the head of security who will call emergency services if needed.
Principles of a safer space
The following principles of a safer space will be in effect at Finncon.
- Everyone has the right to choose who they are touched by and how, and who they spend their time with. You must respect the physical and mental space of other people. Do not touch anyone without asking for permission. You cannot know the boundaries of others without asking! Make sure to advocate for yourself, and ask for space when needed.
- Don’t bully, mock, discriminate, or embarrass anyone with your speech, actions or behaviour. Don’t judge anyone’s looks. Don’t uphold stereotypes.
- Don’t assume anyone’s gender, nationality, ethnicity, opinions, religion, values, health or their ability to function.
- Give space. Include everyone in conversations and make sure no one is excluded. Don’t steamroll the opinions of others, and let everyone take a turn when speaking. Handle sensitive topics with respect, and honour their right to privacy.
- Listen and learn. Face new topics, people and perspectives with an open mind, and without reservation. Regard each topic and situation as an opportunity to learn.
- Apologise if you have offended or hurt anyone, despite not having meant to. If your behaviour is disruptive to others, and you’re asked to stop, do so immediately.
