Finncon programme has been published!
As usual Finncon this year has a wide variety of programme in three languages. Even though most of the programme is in Finnish, you can still find panels, presentations, workshops, guest of honour programme and more in either English or Swedish too.
There is also the Finncon Academic Track that is mostly in English that is open to all Finncon members and showcases academic science fiction and fantasy research in Finland and abroad.
This year is also anniversary of the organized Finnish fandom which turns 50 with the founding of Turun Science Fiction Seura and the 40th anniversary of Finncon! This means we will have fandom oriented programme that also connects with the theme of this year Beginnings.
Changes to programme are possible and we will try to keep to programme on the website as up-to-date as possible.
Masquerade
The traditional Finncon masquerade is a playful competition open to participants with all levels of experience. The competition will be judged by a jury made up of the Guest of Honours and other fandom experts. The competition will be presented in both Finnish and English.
You can take part in the competition as a solo act or in a group. You costume can be from science fiction, fantasy, anime/manga, comic books or horror and can be based on existing franchises or be completely original. There will be two categories in the competition, one for adults and another for people under 18.
The masquerade is not a serious competition, therefore a lot of the costumes will be rewarded for various different reasons. You might win an award for best hat, most winged costume or just for a great attitude.
The masquerade host will introduce all the participants one by one by their name and character. You will have a chance to pose and then you will be asked to move to the side. Unfortunately, for copyright reasons, using your own background music won’t be possible.
Your costume does not need to be handmade and you are allowed to use bought elements. If you have props like weapons and such, you are allowed to carry and pose with them as long as you are careful. Outside of the masquerade weapon props need to be left in the cloakroom.
You can sign-up for the Masquerade using the Masquerade Sign-up Form (up until Thursday, July 9th) or during the convention at the information desk up until 15.00 / 3pm on Saturday July 10th.
Evening Parties
There will be two evening parties in Finncon, a smaller one on Friday and the main evening party on Saturday.
Friday evening party will be in Bar Edison (Kauppiaskatu 4, 20100 Turku) from 19.00 / 7 pm onwards.
There will be a release party downstairs for new Finnish language books from The Finnish Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, the publisher Nysalor and the Taikasana association.
Saturday evening party will be in Saaristobaari (Aurakatu 14, 20100 Turku) from 19.00 / 7 pm onwards. The whole bar is reserved only for Finncon.
There will be few programme items in the evening party:
21.00 / 9 pm:
Odysseia / Odyssey dance performance by mermaids will take our adventures around the world for a short trip.
21.15 / 9.15 pm: Something special for the Guest of Honours
21.30 / 9.30 pm: The Masquerade prizes for adults will be presented
