The current state of democracy worldwide calls for an urgent discussion on its chances of success – or even survival. In her keynote speech, the Academic Guest of Honour Hanna-Riikka Roine examines the relationship between speculative fiction and democratic imagination. She discusses speculative fiction, and in particular literary conventions and methods characteristic to it, as one of the central arenas for the cultural sphere as it imagines democracy.

She focuses on the foundation of democratic imagination from the perspective of speculative narratives and storytelling imagining both the beginnings and ends for democracy. In this way, she aims to present a framework for analysing different forms and meanings democratic imagination may have as it is enacted – written and read – through speculative fiction.
